I once lived in a rental garden flat
cohabited with
garden worms
scorpions
and
spiders
Garden worms came and went
through the wet walls
minding their own business
Scorpions were kept out of my flat
by the lavender shrubs I planted
could’t label them as intruders
The itsy winzy spiders though
I had a gentlemen’s agreement with
They stayed at the four corners of the ceiling
free to spin webs and catch their prey
mosquitoes, flies and clothes moths
to my delight
In exchange
they would never
receive a mist of lethal spray
The spiders and I had a deal
and it was a win-win
for both of us
Oh man, Cassa! That’s actually really clever to put up with the little spiders, in exchange for them removing the flies and mosquitoes! We tend not to get those little spiders which make webs, here! Instead the occasional house spider running around the floor. At least not in more modern places. I guess there’s not many gaps for them to get through!
Jesus, you just reminded me! I did exactly the same as this one— in the last flat I rented, which was modern but within an old building with high ceilings, and had old-fashioned high windows which you needed a pole to open, there were loads of those spiders which had created webs around the open gap (the window was constantly open through the summer), and I realised they were catching all the flies and moths, and therefore despite my bright studio lights, I never had any of those in there!

Now makes sense when you mentioned before you don’t need fly screens.

Yeah, I mean in summer we get a lot of moths and other little flies which are attracted to the light, but to keep them out all you have to do is keep your lights off at night! Or have dark curtains :D.
A trick I used to do when younger, was leave my bedroom lights off but turn the landing light on, to get any flies out or to keep them out :D.

I dont mind spiders as long as they’re not where I sleep!

I don’t remember spiders bothered me ever. Sometimes they crawl across the dash in the car when i drive, just trying to get to a safe spot I guess.

A pest control specialist told me once that if they are by your bed, just brush their webs away. They usually get the hint and set up house somewhere else.

I second that. I don’t like to kill them.

This is a lovely post with the perfect accompanying picture. This is a lovely idea living around nature and having a lovely agreement with the spider. This is a lovely fairy tail dear Cassa. Big hugs, Joni
