Expressions

You said my face said it all.

I frowned when I was really mad at you
without uttering any offensive words.
I raised my eyebrows when I was skeptical
instead of questioning your integrity.
I looked far away when I was sad
with no trace of tears.

I couldn’t argue with you.
I didn’t see my own expressions.

  1. You got it exactly right here. The power of expressions. They can say everything or the opposite of what we really intend. And the end went farther toward explaining this, because sometimes we make certain faces without even realizing it. A very thoughtful poem.

  2. How many times have I viewed others with skeptical expressions towards me? The occasional person who adopts that expression upon first meeting them, and it never leaves them. Those relationships always end in tears, because those are the people who instinctively dislike me! For some reason. That’s what happened with the person who runs the autism charity, ironically lol. Given that it’s supposed to be all about welcoming difference.

Sorry this is quite unrelated to your poem, just made me think of it. The tension when somebody’s body language is inexplicably telling you these things, whilst they’re not explicitly saying what they think. Even worse when it’s for no reason since they’ve only just met you!

      1. Yeah. I can’t even relate to having an urge to judge, to stop. 🤷‍♂️. You can’t judge somebody instantly. In this case, I could immediately judge this tension and negativity which the person was giving off. But I held back from judging because surely they didn’t already dislike me, for no reason? Especially since my first interaction was them was volunteering to help them!

But it turned out that was indeed what I was feeling from them! xD
