Birds and You

I love the quiet
But I prefer birds sing
I am tired of listening to people
But your speaking makes me happy
Someone is so full of enthusiasm
It isn’t what I am used to
Someone is so full of life
It is what my heart desires
How satisfying
A life filled with birds singing
And you

Yesterday No More

Once upon a time
she would let people
drown her rice paper self esteem
with boastful spits.

Nowadays,
she tries to reconcile
with her past no more
because dwelling on
what was once before
is a complete waste of life.

She only wants to leave
ample trace of
joy and healing.

The Lesser of Two Evils

This is the recent collaboration with Benjamin Grossman which helped me greatly in breaking my writing ‘numbness’. Please check out Ben’s blog if you have not already read his amazing work.

The glacial battle begins in our heads
Face pressed to the sun-pierced windowpane
January snow in recession, the signs of regression
Half hidden like an iceberg in the arctic water
And where once a soft glow illuminated the surface
Only the placement of desolation remains
Reverberating silent screams

There is no one way of knowing cold
The stages are fluid and transient
Its meaning bitterly ambiguous
Yet in rare lucid moments, I see husks
An empty bed, scarred skin, chattered teeth
Spirit-numbed mind, missed meals, vacant smiles

There is no one way of knowing cold
Its symptoms appear to have no rhyme or reason
Although they move with wintry doom
From person to person increasing in aggression
Till you understand the meaning of icy
Which unbeknownst to us creeps in succession

There is no one way of knowing cold
Though maybe it’s always the same
Emotional and physical reaction
A state of feeling dangerously low
Struggling to survive between cold and colder
The very same polar opposites: Arctic and Antarctica

Subtly Distinct

I will be offended
if you call me pretty
Pretty is like a petal
crushed and bruised
after its maturity

I will be delighted
if you call me beautiful
Beauty is at any stage
through and through
till eternity

Relatively Speaking

Learning

She never understood
why did he despise her
for her different approach
to life
the same life
they so happened to share

He couldn’t comprehend
why was she dissatisfied
with this way of living
the same way
his parents lived

They were told
by an elder
before their wedding day
that they shall leave
their family history behind
to unite into a new family
of their own

When they heard of wisdom
they couldn’t comprehend it
Just hope that
they eventually become wiser
from their lived experience

Summer Beach

Cicadas, kookaburras and seagulls
are in full blown voice competition
from their own colony
No one knows
how does this seemingly chaotic battle tune coexist
with the synchronised sound of waves

While
Beach goers
pitch their tents, cabanas
and lay out beach towels
claiming their own
unmarked territory
No one cares
how others spend their holiday
They are quite happy
to share the sun
and the sound of nature

Woken Up

I have recently
Found out
Living with someone
Who is
Considerate
Fair
Helpful
Caring
And
Lighthearted
Is such
Joy

No Regrets

I laughed
I cried
I tasted life
I’m not afraid to say goodbye
